Gateway to the Bow Valley Corridor at the foot of Mount Lougheed and Windtower Mountain, Dead Man's Flats’ ominous name seems out of place with its serene surroundings. Located just off the TransCanada, it can be easily missed but for its gas stations and convenience stores. But Dead Man's Flats is more than a mere pit stop. Only minutes southeast of Canmore, it is an alternative to the area’s resort towns, with quiet accommodation options in a relatively untouched environment.
There are a couple of legends behind the name. One tells the tale of two Aboriginal beaver trappers. Dead Man’s Flats, once part of Rocky Mountain National Park (later Banff), was patrolled by a warden who spotted the men. In defense, the men smeared beaver blood all over themselves to make it appear as though they were dead. When the warden left them for help, they fled with their beaver pelts in hand.
Whether fact of fiction, the intrigue behind the name—Dead Man’s Flats—remains, in contrast to an area that is teeming with natural life.
